On September 11th, 2006, the Hudson River Park Trust closed the barge I'd been paddling out of since 1999. We were collateral damage in an epic battle between the Trust and Basketball City, aka the Interim Tenant from Hell (in the end they actually tried to declare bankruptcy to get one last stay of execution). With 2 week's notice, I moved to the Sebago Canoe Club in Jamaica Bay. The future of paddling at the barge is now in question - they'll be moving to a location a couple of piers north, and as the barge was being closed, we found out that the Department of Environmental Control governing the use of the barge at the new site excluded paddling. The barge paddlers have banded together to fight that; I'm following it, but I'm having such a good time at my new club (nice people, fascinating bay, and not feeling like your access can be pulled at a bureaucrat's whim is BLISS) that I believe I'm staying right where I am.
